Pills

It has been while since I made the last piece. I found myself running out of inspiration and going to work without inspiration is quite oppressive. I decided to take a break and work more on my music compositions. I am happy to inform that I have made a lot of progress in that area.... Continue Reading →

Pyramids at Twilight

I set myself a new challenge this week. I decided to make an entire piece with variations on the same color - purple. I allowed myself a slight incursion into pinkish territory but since color is a spectrum rather than a precise thing, I think I am in the right here 😛

The Phenomenon

This week, I worked on depicting a science fiction scene. I wanted to explore the concept of an observation deck on a Generation ship which has just arrived in a new solar system and is surveying an interesting phenomenon of auroras in outer space. I am not sure if the physics of this is legit... Continue Reading →

Many Worlds

I was scrolling through Behance for inspiration and I found Gabriel Silveira's artwork. This aesthetic matches perfectly with my sensibilities and I got down to creating something similar in order to learn. I feel that I have been able to capture the central essence of the aesthetic but I am sure there are many improvements... Continue Reading →

Desert Moon

This week, I chose to work on a simple landscape with a limited palette of colors - blue for the sky, golden yellow for the desert sand, and white for the moon. Here's the process: Step 1: Creating the terrain outline. In order to create these shapes (or curves as they are called in Affinity),... Continue Reading →

The Gathering

I have been fascinated by the isometric perspective since sometime now but never really tried it. This week I decided to explore it. I looked up how the Grid manager works in Affinity designer and after a skimming through this tutorial on YouTube , I was all set to go. Overall, creating shapes is a... Continue Reading →

Neowise

While browsing Reddit today, I found some really good pics of the Neowise comet on R/EarthPorn. This inspired me to work on a minimal landscape version of the comet flying over a lake. The piece makes heavy use of the gradient tool in Affinity Designer. Happy to say that I am getting comfortable with using... Continue Reading →

Colored balls

Came across an image this week which featured 3D spheres on pastel backgrounds. I was intrigued by the aesthetic and tried to replicate the style in a 2D format and yet keep it as hyper-realistic as possible . Learned quite a bit about texturing using the Noise function in Affinity Designer.

City by the bay

This week, I thought that I would learn more about how to use gradients in Affinity Designer and decided that a neon lit cityscape would be the best way to do it. I made a speed run of the whole creation process. You can watch it below. Hope you like it. https://youtu.be/IQTmoNvZRp4 Speed run of... Continue Reading →

Neon Evenings

I recently purchased Affinity Designer after doing some research. A lot of people on the internet think that it walks the line between a Pro and Beginner level tool quite well. As someone who dabbles in this as a hobby, I think paying monthly subscriptions is a horrible idea (looking at you, Adobe!). Affinity doesn't... Continue Reading →

Glimpsing Infinity

The inspiration for this came to me while surfing Reddit and I immediately got down to figure out how to construct it in Processing. The first step was to build the circular pattern at the heart of the piece. I came across a Processing code sample which explained the concept of rotating shapes. I chose... Continue Reading →

Stacked Squares

This was hard!!! I was aiming for a stack of squares in a sort of a nested pattern on the grid. Something similar to this one. Additionally, I wanted to make it a little unpredictable and therefore not be super neat and precise. I had to work this problem out on a notebook because the... Continue Reading →

Old-School Atomic Model

I tried my hand at composing some geometric shapes with a grid in the background. I used Processing to do the job. You can find the entire source code below. I am sure the code is a bit dirty but what the hell! Let me know how to improve it. void setup() { size(800, 800);... Continue Reading →

Pixelation

I wanted to convey how pixels appear if you zoom very deeply into a screen or a digital image. My strategy here was to create a grid using a for loop across the X and Y co-ordinates of the canvas. This is fairly straightforward. Next, I wanted to cluster pixels at regular periods into a... Continue Reading →

Digital Space

The intention behind this piece was to depict some sort of digital matrixy space thing. As you can see, I have clearly failed to do that. However, with a bit of tweaking, I managed to get it to a point where it didn't look too bad to my eyes. Have a look at the Processing... Continue Reading →

Concentric Circles 2

It is amazing how sometimes a bit of simple logic can give rise to something quite intricate. I used Processing to make this. If you look at the source code, you will be surprised to see how terse the code is. The doubly nested for loop does all the heavy lifting here. As always, happy... Continue Reading →

Bursts of color

There are very few courses or tutorials for generative art on the web. This is why I was so happy to come across Matt DesLauriers's course on Frontend Masters. This piece was made as a project for that course. We used a JS framework called Canvas-Sketch. It is an open source project initiated by Matt.... Continue Reading →

A 30-sided Mystic Rose

I have been drawing this pattern on my notebooks since I was in school. I didn't really know that this pattern was an actual thing. It is called a Mystic rose. I came across a tutorial on Youtube which showed me how to go about constructing one in Inkscape. Inkscape is a free, open-source, cross-platform... Continue Reading →

A Flat Moon Conspiracy

After my initial foray into vector art with Gravit Designer, I decided to explore flat illustrations. The moon shining over the earth ended up being a simple idea that I could explore. The name of the piece is a reference to the Flat Earth conspiracy and the flat nature of the illustration.
